The Meaning Of The Word Namaste
Namaste is a word commonly used in the East as a greeting , usually accompanied by a slight bow with both hands pressed together , held in front of the chest , palms touching and fingers pointing upwards .
Another word derived from namaste is Namostute ( namo-stu-te ) meaning “let there be salutations to you” used mostly when addressing a diety or GOD.In recent times various complicated and poetic meanings of the word have been put forward ; the ones that come close are :
- I honour the spirit in you which is also in me ( author Kabir Chopra )
- I salute the God within you
- Your spirit and mine are one ………….. and there are many more
Namaste is a Sanskrit word ( namah – te ; I bow to you ) and does not have an exact translation into English , but the above mentioned versions are a good attempt .
I came across this video and thought it was fantastic – one of the best explanations of the of the word Namaste from a church sermon by Pastor Eddie D Smith. Watch the video below and let me know your thoughts . A real life lesson on how to treat your fellow human beings.
